Patch for the NFS Bug in VMware 5.5U1

VMware patch for NFS bug

If you recall, I warned you against blindly installing VMware 5.5 upgrade one. There were two reasons for this warning. First, it introduced a pretty severe NFS bug — the NFS mounts would randomly drop and re-connect. Imagine what fun this would be if your databases happened to be attached via NFS mounts?!?

Anyway, the issue is now patched. So, if you do upgrade to U1, we can fix the introduced bug. The patch is called ESXi550-201406401-SG and can be downloaded separately or access via Update Manager in vCenter via the iSphere fat client. Installing the patch will require a host reboot. Please see the following for a description of the patch:

If you decide to upgrade to U1, note that it will re-introduce the heartbleed vulnerability, and you will have to patch for it. See my previous blog post (https://www.orionscache.com/…creating-the-heartbleed-update-manager-baseline) regarding how to patch for heart bleed.

Normally, I am a big proponent of keeping systems patched. But in this case, with two major bugs in U1 that have to be patched, I am still under the opinion that you can wait for U2 to be released for 5.5, unless there is a particular feature you need in U1. VMware does not seem to have definitive schedules for their update releases… but looking at the gaps between previous upgrades, I expect that they will release U2 in October 2014.
